He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in political science while winning four letters on the varsity swim team. After spending a year as an assistant swim coach for the University of Michigan he decided to change his focus to the practice of medicine. He attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he obtained an M.D. degree. His father is a urologist in Ann Arbor, Michigan which helped direct his interest towards genitourinary surgery. He completed his urological residency training at the University of Miami under the guidance of Dr. Mark Soloway. It was here that he was exposed to a large volume of laparoscopic and oncologic surgery. This helped shape Dr. Van Appledorn’s commitment to minimally invasive surgical techniques. After completing residency training, Dr. Van Appledorn elected to do a fellowship to further develop his surgical skills. He spent the year working with world-renowned robotic surgery expert, Professor Anthony Costello in Melbourne, Australia.(www.tonycostello.com.au) It was during this invaluable year that Dr. Van Appledorn learned to perform robotic prostatectomies to treat prostate cancer. He was also part of the world’s first randomized trial comparing KTP laser prostatectomy with traditional surgery for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Dr. Van Appledorn established a urology practice in Fort Pierce, Florida with Dr. Adam Ball in 2005. His main interest is minimally invasive treatments of genitourinary cancers, BPH, and kidney stones. Some of the surgical procedures he performs include laparoscopic kidney removal, robotic surgery for prostate cancer, and laser surgery for BPH. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Van Appledorn enjoys spending time with his wife Samantha and two young children. Samantha is a former news broadcaster for the CBS affiliate in Miami.
